Comprehensive Peace Agreement
اتفاقية السلام الشامل
Summary
Sudanese peace agreement signed in Naivasha, Kenya on 2005-01-09 ending the second Sudanese civil war (1983-2005, ~2 million dead). Created a six-year power-sharing arrangement between the Khartoum government and the southern SPLM, with a referendum on southern independence at the end.
Impact
Set the political process that led to South Sudan's independence on 2011-07-09 — the only successful secession in MENA in the modern era. Did not resolve the Darfur conflict; the 2019 Bashir overthrow and subsequent 2023 civil war flow partly from the unfinished political transitions the CPA set in motion.
