    Herut's Begin leads Likud to the 1977 "upheaval"

    In the 17 May 1977 election the Herut-led Likud won 43 seats, and Menachem Begin became prime minister — the "Mahapach" (upheaval) that ended 29 years of Labor-Zionist dominance and brought the nationalist right to power for the first time, reshaping Israeli politics and enabling the 1978 Camp David accords.

    Herut merges into the Likud

    On 13 September 1973 Herut joined the Liberals (as Gahal), the Free Centre, the National List and the Movement for Greater Israel to form the Likud bloc under Menachem Begin — consolidating the Israeli right into the vehicle that would soon end Labor's monopoly on power.

    Begin founds Herut from the Irgun

    In June 1948 Menachem Begin transformed the Irgun underground into the Herut ("Freedom") party, the standard-bearer of Revisionist Zionism and the Greater Israel idea. For nearly three decades Herut was the main right-wing opposition to the dominant Mapai/Labor establishment.
