    Mapai merges into the Israeli Labor Party

    In January 1968 Mapai merged with Ahdut HaAvoda and Ben-Gurion's breakaway Rafi to form the Israeli Labor Party, ending Mapai's separate existence after nearly four decades as the central party of the Zionist left and the state's founding governing party.

    Mapai-led leadership declares Israeli independence; Ben-Gurion becomes first PM

    On 14 May 1948 Mapai leader David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel and headed its provisional government. Mapai then won the first Knesset election in 1949 (46 of 120 seats) and continuously supplied the prime minister until 1968 — Ben-Gurion, Sharett, Eshkol and Meir — building the new state's institutions, welfare system and compulsory education.

    Mapai founded; Ben-Gurion's rise to Labor-Zionist dominance

    Mapai (the Workers' Party of the Land of Israel) was founded on 5 January 1930 by the merger of Hapoel Hatzair and Ahdut HaAvoda. David Ben-Gurion soon took it over, making it the dominant force of the Yishuv's labor-Zionist movement and the Histadrut, the platform from which he would lead the pre-state institutions.
