    Hama massacre crushes the Muslim Brotherhood uprising

    In February 1982 the Syrian army and Defense Companies, on Hafez al-Assad's orders, besieged Hama for 27 days to crush a Muslim Brotherhood-led revolt that had declared the city "liberated." Estimates of those killed range from 5,000 to 40,000. The massacre ended the insurgency, effectively destroyed the Brotherhood inside Syria for a generation, and became a byword for regime brutality.

    Law 49 of 1980 makes Muslim Brotherhood membership a capital offence

    In July 1980 the Syrian government ratified Law No. 49, making membership in the Muslim Brotherhood punishable by death. A brief grace period drew a couple of thousand to turn themselves in; the law outlawed the organization for decades and underpinned the mass repression that followed.

    Islamist uprising: the Aleppo Artillery School massacre

    On 16 June 1979 gunmen of the Muslim Brotherhood-linked "Fighting Vanguard" massacred dozens of cadets at the Aleppo Artillery School, a signal escalation of the 1976–1982 Sunni-Islamist insurgency against Hafez al-Assad's Ba'athist government. The campaign of assassinations and bombings drew ferocious state reprisals.
