Bahrain jails rights defender Nabeel Rajab over tweets

Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and a leading figure of the 2011 uprising, was in and out of prison from 2012 and in February 2018 sentenced to five years for tweets criticizing the Saudi-led war in Yemen and alleging torture in Bahrain's Jaw prison — convicted of "spreading false rumours in time of war" and "insulting" the authorities. His case became emblematic of the Gulf's criminalization of online speech.
