Rafik Hariri assassinated, triggering the Cedar Revolution

On 14 February 2005 a massive truck bomb killed former PM Rafik Hariri and 21 others on the Beirut seafront. Widely blamed on the Syrian-Hezbollah security order (a UN tribunal later convicted a Hezbollah member), the assassination ignited the "Cedar Revolution," forcing Syria to withdraw its troops after nearly three decades and realigning Lebanese politics into the rival March 14 and March 8 camps.
