USFP leads Morocco's "alternance" government — first opposition-led cabinet

After the USFP won the most seats in the November 1997 election, King Hassan II appointed its leader, veteran socialist Abderrahmane Youssoufi, prime minister on 4 February 1998; the "alternance consensuelle" cabinet (USFP, Istiqlal, RNI and others) took office on 14 March 1998. It was the first time since independence that a former opposition party of the left headed a Moroccan government — a managed, monarchy-supervised transition that lasted until 2002.
