King Abdullah grants Saudi women the municipal vote

On 25 September 2011 King Abdullah announced that women would be allowed to vote and run in municipal elections from 2015 and be appointed to the Consultative (Shura) Council, where he later named 30 women — landmark, if cautious, social reforms in the ultra-conservative kingdom. The "reformist monarch" also founded the co-educational KAUST university (2009), even as he tightened repression of dissent after the 2011 Arab Spring.
