Yemen Saleh founds the General People's Congress
On 24 August 1982 President Ali Abdullah Saleh established the General People's Congress in Sanaa as a catch-all "umbrella" organization in North Yemen; after unification it became the de jure ruling party from 1993 and the vehicle through which Saleh dominated Yemeni politics for some three decades.
