US Treasury sanctions FPM leader Gebran Bassil for corruption

On 6 November 2020 the US Treasury's OFAC designated Gebran Bassil — FPM president, MP, and former foreign, energy and telecommunications minister (Aoun's son-in-law) — under the Global Magnitsky program "for his role in corruption in Lebanon," the first Magnitsky designation in Lebanon. Treasury cited steering of government funds to associates via front companies and purchase of political influence. Bassil denied wrongdoing; the FPM dismissed the move as political pressure tied to its alliance with Hezbollah.
