Islamic Movement splits; Salah's Northern Branch boycotts the Knesset

In the mid-1990s the Islamic Movement among Israel's Palestinian citizens split: the hardline Northern Branch, led by Sheikh Raed Salah (former mayor of Umm al-Fahm), refused to run for the Knesset on the grounds that participation would legitimize the state, and built its activism around the "al-Aqsa is in danger" campaign.
