New Wafd revived as Mubarak-era liberal opposition

The New Wafd — heir to the pre-1952 Wafd, Egypt's historic liberal-nationalist party — was first re-established in 1978, banned within months, and re-licensed in 1983 after Sadat's assassination. It became the main legal liberal opposition under Mubarak, contesting most parliamentary elections from 1984 onward.
