King Hussein bans all parties; JCP driven underground until 1993

After the communist-aligned National Front's gains in the 1956 election and the nationalist Nabulsi government, King Hussein dismissed the cabinet in April 1957, dissolved parliament, banned all political parties and imposed martial law that lasted until 1991. The Jordanian Communist Party remained illegal until 1993 — a defining episode of the monarchy's closure of pluralist politics.
