Mustafa Barghouti finishes second in the 2005 presidential election

In the 9 January 2005 Palestinian Authority presidential election to succeed Yasser Arafat, al-Mubadara leader Mustafa Barghouti ran as an independent and finished second to Fatah's Mahmoud Abbas with roughly 19–20% of the vote — the strongest showing for a non-Fatah, non-Hamas candidate and the high point of the "third way."
