Boumediene seizes power in Algeria's 1965 coup

On 19 June 1965 Defence Minister Houari Boumediene overthrew Algeria's first president, Ahmed Ben Bella, in a bloodless coup. He ruled until his death in 1978 as an austere state-socialist developmentalist — nationalizing oil and gas, pursuing heavy industrialization and land reform — and became a leading voice of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Third World's call for a New International Economic Order.
