Sharon's war and the Sabra and Shatila massacre

As defense minister, Ariel Sharon was the architect of Israel's June 1982 invasion of Lebanon to expel the PLO. On 16–18 September 1982, allied Phalangist militiamen massacred hundreds to thousands of Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps, which Israeli forces controlled. Israel's own Kahan Commission found Sharon personally responsible for failing to prevent it, forcing his resignation as defense minister in 1983.
