Islamists assassinate Sadat at a military parade

On 6 October 1981 President Anwar Sadat was assassinated by soldiers linked to Egyptian Islamic Jihad during a parade marking the 1973 war, in retaliation for the peace with Israel and a sweeping September 1981 crackdown on dissidents. His killing brought Hosni Mubarak to power and underscored the domestic backlash to his peace policy.
