Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia jails women's-rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul
In May 2018 — weeks before the kingdom lifted the ban on women driving that she had campaigned against — Saudi authorities arrested Loujain al-Hathloul and other women activists. She was detained for nearly three years, alleging torture and sexual harassment in custody, convicted under the counter-terror law, and released in February 2021 under a travel ban. The case epitomized the Saudi pattern of co-opting reforms while crushing the reformers.
