Sadr orders all 73 of his MPs to resign from parliament

After eight months of deadlock in which he could not form a government, on 12–13 June 2022 Muqtada al-Sadr ordered all 73 Sadrist MPs to resign en masse from parliament. The seats passed to runners-up, mostly from the rival Coordination Framework, which then formed the Sudani government. The walkout — followed by deadly clashes in the Green Zone in August 2022 — was a dramatic instance of withdrawing from institutions rather than governing through them.
