HTS figures take key ministries in Syria's post-Assad government

After Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham led the offensive that toppled Bashar al-Assad on 8 December 2024, the HTS-dominated transitional government installed on 21 December 2024 named Asaad al-Shaibani — a founding Nusra Front member who had run HTS's Salvation Government foreign affairs — as foreign minister, and military commander Murhaf Abu Qasra as defense minister, both retained when al-Sharaa formed a fuller cabinet in 2025. It marked former jihadist insurgents taking the levers of the Syrian state.
