Essebsi wins Tunisia's first free presidential election

On 21 December 2014 Beji Caid Essebsi — a veteran of the Bourguiba and Ben Ali states and founder of the secular Nidaa Tounes — won Tunisia's first free, direct presidential election, defeating incumbent Moncef Marzouki. His victory completed the post-revolution institutional transition, though critics warned that his rehabilitation of old-regime figures and later alliance with the Islamist Ennahda diluted the revolution's promise.
