On 15 September 2024, after the parliamentary election, King Abdullah II accepted Bisher al-Khasawneh's resignation and appointed Jafar Hassan — a Harvard- and Geneva-educated economist and former deputy PM for economic affairs — as prime minister, tasked with cushioning Jordan's economy against the fallout of the Gaza war and advancing debt-reduction reforms.
