On 24 January 2022 Saad Hariri announced he was suspending his role in politics and that his Future Movement would not contest the May 2022 parliamentary election — a stunning withdrawal by the figurehead of Lebanon's Sunni establishment, driven by Saudi abandonment and the country's financial collapse. His exit left a vacuum in Sunni leadership and reshaped the post-2022 parliament.
