The Democratic National Rally (RND) was created in February 1997 by figures close to President Liamine Zéroual and the security establishment; only months later it won the June 1997 legislative election as the largest party — a result the opposition denounced as engineered, making the RND the archetypal Algerian "administrative party" governing alongside the FLN.
