Madbouly government floats the pound and expands the IMF program to $8bn

Under Madbouly, Egypt let the pound sharply depreciate and, on 6 March 2024, won an expansion of its IMF loan from $3 billion to $8 billion — unlocked by the $35 billion Ras El-Hekma investment deal with the UAE in late February 2024. The package cemented an austerity-and-foreign-capital response to a severe foreign-currency crisis, with heavy social costs.
