Al-Mashat becomes the Houthis' top political leader

After the Houthis' Supreme Political Council chairman Saleh al-Sammad was killed in a Saudi-coalition airstrike in mid-April 2018, Mahdi al-Mashat was elevated to chairman of the Council on 25 April 2018 — the de facto head of state across Houthi-controlled northern Yemen, including Sanaa. He has since presided over the movement's wartime governance and its Red Sea escalation.
