Sharon executes the unilateral disengagement from Gaza

In August 2005 Prime Minister Ariel Sharon — long the patron of the settlement movement — carried out a unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip, evacuating all 21 Israeli settlements and roughly 8,500 settlers and withdrawing the army. The wrenching reversal split Likud and led Sharon to bolt and found Kadima months later; critics on the right never forgave him, while it left Gaza's status unresolved ahead of the 2007 Hamas takeover.
