On 10 May 2024, Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah issued a decree dissolving the National Assembly and suspending several articles of the constitution for a period of up to four years. He said the step was intended to allow a comprehensive review of the democratic process, citing chronic deadlock between the government and parliament over cabinet formation. The move came weeks after the April 2024 elections to the 50-seat assembly and a prior dissolution in February 2024, and transferred legislative powers to the Emir and the appointed cabinet during the suspension.
