  • Confirmed Party merged March 1, 1992

    Mapam co-founds Meretz, ending its independent run

    After joining Labor's Alignment in 1969 and breaking away in 1984 over the national-unity government with Likud, a weakened Mapam merged with Ratz and Shinui to form Meretz in 1992 and dissolved entirely into it by 1997 — folding the historic Marxist-Zionist left into the broader social-democratic Meretz.

    Mapam founded as Israel's Marxist-Zionist left

    Mapam was established in January 1948 by the merger of the kibbutz-based Hashomer Hatzair and Ahdut HaAvoda Poale Zion, espousing a Marxist Labor-Zionism initially sympathetic to the Soviet Union. For a time the second-largest force in Israel and strong among the kibbutzim and the military, it sat to the left of the dominant Mapai.
